Not too sure who JBG was, or even if s/he was the builder, or the owner. However there's another "JBG 1879" just around the corner in Taunton Road, which featured in this quiz quite a few years ago. Like many of the carved dates around the area, it shows the building boom at the end of the 19th century; Swanage must have looked very different in the 1860s!
