This is an
Environment
Agency
Bench
Mark. "Benchmarks" are a precisely-measured height above sea level, used by surveyors and (in the case of the Environment Agency) hydrologists and geologists. A
national database details all the EA benchmarks, their exact location and heights. Scientists can then re-measure to check for ground movement or changes in sea level, and use the benchmarks as a "known spot" for taking other measurements from. Benchmark "spotting" is a popular, if niche, hobby and there is even a website (co-incidentally created by yours truly!) for logging your visits to EA benchmarks at
